New private hospital opens in Scotland

A new £5 million private hospital has opened in Livingstone, Scotland. It will be operated by Cosmedicare UK, a privately-owned cosmetic surgery provider.

St Ellen’s hospital will provide a wide range of medical specialties including all surgical procedures and reconstructions covering face, breast, body, gynae, gender reassignment but, most importantly, private GP services, as well as intensive laser therapies and hand and eye burns treatments.

Cosmedicare was founded five years ago and, with its new addition, it operates four private hospitals in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Stirling, and Livingstone.

Managing director and founder Gill Baird, who self-funded the project, said: “We have grown the business exponentially with 2021 being a pivotal year with the opening of St Ellen’s. This hospital has been created to allow us to expand into other medical specialties, growing not only our team of Cosmedicare surgeons and specialties but also to allow us to welcome independent surgeons under the historical practicing privileges system which governs private hospitals in the UK.”

Baird hopes the new hospital can help tackle the growing NHS backlog: “Our ability to provide a bespoke support service to these [independent] surgeons, will empower them to treat their patients in the same patient-centered pathway we adopt as our own, without limitations on theatre allocation which is currently being experienced in the UK as a result of Covid-19 and NHS backlogs – this is something we expect will be an attractive prospect to surgeons and patients alike.”
