UK patient engagement platform (PEP) supplier DrDoctor has appointed Nick Barlow – who serves as chief digital transformation officer at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) – as executive director.

Barlow joins the executive team to support DrDoctor’s efforts in driving the next phase of their impact and growth across the NHS, supporting the continued roll out of patient engagement tools across the UK, and driving the shift toward full integration of the patient engagement platform.

Prior to working at UHB, Barlow was a partner at consultancy Newton Europe for 11 years where he led the healthcare practice, working with the NHS and local authorities to improve service quality for local people. Barlow also brings with him an array of technical innovation skills from his work in the simulation team at McLaren F1.

Barlow said: “My experiences at and prior to UHB have led me to this career change, where I can help implement a full operational shift as painlessly as possible for each institution. Working to adopt new and emerging technologies to improve patient care through a global pandemic was a new challenge that only contributed to my passion for this sector.

“DrDoctor has demonstrated that there is a better way for patients to take control of their care, and I’m excited to work with the team to ensure that all of the NHS can reap each possible benefit of this innovative transition.”

Founder of DrDoctor, Tom Whicher says: “Nick has everything DrDoctor needs to make an impactful contribution to our leadership team. He understands the value that we place on patient experience, and the technology that goes behind a smooth transition to more patient self-help. He also understands the processes behind implementing this platform, which will make him a fantastic leader throughout each operational transition. Nick will oversee the smooth transitions that are vital to maintaining quality of care while giving each hospital and trust the best experience.”

Barlow’s appointment comes following the news earlier this year that DrDoctor has secured £10 million in investment through a funding round led by YFM Equity Partners, and supported by existing investors, Ananda Impact Ventures and 24 Haymarket, as reported.
