Totally: John McMullan

Totally, a provider of front-line healthcare services, corporate fitness and wellbeing services across the UK and Ireland, has appointed John McMullan as medical director of the group, an executive board position, with effect from 1 January.

This new role will provide leadership across the group for medical and clinical staff, as well as providing strategic advice to the board on future growth opportunities. McMullan will also ensure that clinical quality remains a priority across the organisation.

McMullan is currently joint managing director of Pioneer Healthcare, a provider of specialist NHS secondary care services acquired by Totally in March this year. He was appointed managing director of Pioneer in 2014.

McMullan is a senior NHS consultant and neurosurgeon with a special interest in spinal surgery, paediatric neurosurgery, neuro-oncology and the treatment of neuromuscular disorders. He was previously head of the department of neurosurgery at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, one of the biggest neurosurgery departments in the UK.  He is currently a consultant neurosurgeon at the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust, and a member of a number of peer review committees in England, including the Paediatric Brain Tumour registry and the Paediatric Head Injury group.

Totally’s chief executive Wendy Lawrence said: “Delivering the right care, first time, every time is at the core of what we do. The NHS trusts Totally to deliver services to more than two million patients each year, and this means ensuring that every one of our services is safe and that a culture of excellence underpins everything we do. As our organisation grows, so must our focus and the addition of a medical director role at board level reflects the growth we have delivered to date and will ensure that we can continue to maintain quality services as we grow even further.”
